If you don’t remember seeing this charming cafe alongside the Yarra River, it may be because what is now one of Melbourne’s best breakfast and lunch destinations was once a public toilet.
Kanteen started out as a simple kiosk which has now expanded to serve greater numbers. The incredibly charming cafe makes the most of its great location by offering plenty of outdoor seating and huge opening windows. Despite being so close to the glitz and glam of Toorak, Kanteen truly feels like a place of refuge letting patrons soak in their surroundings as they try to make a good start to the day.
The atmosphere is most defiantly informal as cyclists stumble to their seats in their little cycling shoes, and dog owners are entangled in a web of leashes. The breakfast menu consists of your gourmet egg dishes made to order, muesli, and one hell of a coffee. Lunch on the other hand is all about the pidés and salads – however watch out! don’t be caught mispronouncing pidé, it could look like you have never been there before which may upset more people than you would like.
(in case you are left wondering what in the world a pidé is, it’s just a Turkish flatbread sandwich)
My advice; for a hearty breakfast don’t miss the porridge.
